Famous as the home of the University of Georgia Bulldogs, Athens is also known as the center of Georgia's alternative scene that gave birth to bands like REM and the B-52s. The downtown center is full of both trendy clubs and downhome bars. The town also has a lot of tradition between the stately buildings of the old university and antebellum homes lining Milledge and Dearing streets. (2005,2010) |
At the heart of the "Classic City" stands the historic city hall building. A sea of red---there is always plenty of school color shown at a University of Georgia football game. The well known arch entry to the UGA campus. The old buildings of downtown Athens now house restaurants, bars, and clubs that made the city a famous alternative music scene. There are a number of old homes throughout Athens and many of the ones on Milledge have been converted to fraternity housing. |
