Famous as the home of the University of Georgia Bulldogs, Athens is also known as the center of Georgia's alternative scene that gave birth to bands like REM and the B-52s. The downtown center is full of both trendy clubs and downhome bars. The town also has a lot of tradition between the stately buildings of the old university and antebellum homes lining Milledge and Dearing streets. (2005,2010)

At the heart of the "Classic City" stands the historic city hall building. A sea of red---there is always plenty of school color shown at a University of Georgia football game. The well known arch entry to the UGA campus. The old buildings of downtown Athens now house restaurants, bars, and clubs that made the city a famous alternative music scene. There are a number of old homes throughout Athens and many of the ones on Milledge have been converted to fraternity housing.
