Travelling down Highway 49 through the pinebelt of Misssippi, it's always a bit pleasantly jarring to arrive in Gulfport where the rural landscape suddenly becomes a beach town with palms and harbors and all of that. It's the main entryway to the Gulf area for Mississippi.

A bit of the palm lined Gulfport downtown buildings. A recent but now signature addition to the Gulfport harbor, this decorative lighthouse replaces on destroyed out on Ship Island in the devestation of Hurrican Katrina. The marina at Gulfport is where you can buy a trip out to Ship Island, an undeveloped barrier island where you can spend all day out in the sun.
A bit of an abstract view is created in this picture of the sand beach at Gulfport.
