I thought Heidelberg was one of the nicest cities I saw in Germany in terms of its view (the sight of the city from either side of the Neckar River is great). It was also my favorite for its castle, a large stone building of walls and towers---much of which was left in ruins after attacks by the French in 1689. Inside are many interesting museums and artifacts including the huge wine vat (Großes Faß) which holds a whopping 48, 780 gallons. (2001)

An overview of the city of Heidelberg. Looking on the city, its bridge, and famous castle from Philosophers Way. Inside the ruins of Heidelberg Castle. The exploded tower, left in two halves just as it was when the French set off an explosion there centuries ago.
