A principal town along the Loire River, Tours gives its name to the Touraine region. Unlike other towns in the valley, Tours is not known for its (rather non-descript) castle but instead for its old medieval section and several grand 19th century constructions. (2007)

The medieval square of Tours once fell into disrepair but was renovated and now is the centerpiece of the old town with busy cafes and restaurants. St. Martin's Basilica by architect Victor Laloux is a relatively recent construction on the site of the much older basilica whose tower can be seen behind. It is a famous pilgrimage spot for the tomb of St. Martin. The Hotel de Ville is another of the grand buildings by the famed architect Victor Laloux.
