Winston-Salem is a cozy town with a dual history----two old communities that combined into one. It is now a thriving city with a preserved historic district (Old Salem) and an very walkable arts-centered downtown core full of specialty cafes and craft breweries.

A skyline view including Winston-Salem's signature building. Original half-timber construction on the Old Salem buildings. These nice gardens are part of a free park on the grounds of what was once a grand 1920s estate where you can now wander past the remains of the old boathouse and pool. Old Salem contains many centuries old buildings used today for both tourist displays as well as ongoing residences and university. Salem was originally established by Moravian settlers in the 1700s escaping persecution and bringing traditional workcraft and progressive community to the area. Old Salem preserves their legacy with many original buildings still baking and crafting according to their old tradition..
