Atlanta
has been a welcoming city for quite an array of refugee groups starting with
Vietnamese and Laotians
refugees in the late 1970s to Cold
War Soviets in the mid-80s to
prominent victims of African genocide (Somalia, Sudan, Rwanda) and
European ethnic cleansing
(Bosnia, Kosovo) in the
1990s. In recent years, Atlanta has
witnessed the arrival of large waves
of new ethnic groups without existing communities in the US. I have had
the chance in my work to interact with many of these groups getting
established in America and learn much about their histories and
cultures.
